It’s the 2nd of July.
This means in a leap year, such as this one, that we are
exactly half way through the year, with 183 days behind us in 2012 and 182 days
yet before us.
It is also the 236th anniversary of when the
Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence, thus
making it official that the United States was independent of Great Britain. It
was only after that that attention was turned to an official Declaration of
Independence, crafted mainly by Thomas Jefferson.
An anticlimax, if you will.
The deed was done on July 2nd and the declaration
was read two days later. Yet to this day July 2nd is merely a
prelude to Independence Day, which of a right should be celebrated on the 2nd.
Even John Adams, in a letter to his wife, Abigail, predicted
that July 2nd would go down in the annals of American history as the
day that will be celebrated by generations of Americans.
Adams, it must be noted, was an insider, and knew the truly
important dates. July 4th however became a media event, and July 2nd
was conveniently relegated to obscurity.
So Happy July 2nd America>
