John Kyl Not Factually Speaking

If you have been in a coma – or are a Teabagger – you are not aware of the great fun that Steve Colbert and Jon Stewart had with Arizona Senator John Kyl’s gargantuan “misspeaking” last week when he stated in no uncertain terms that 90% of what Planned Parenthood “does” is abortions.

And now I hear that people are tweeting other statements that are not meant to be factual.

What fun.

I want in on the fun. Times are so bad now that a little fun might just be what the doctor (of what some of us are going to be settling for in the future – nurse practitioner) ordered.

First, please to note that the following are not meant to be factual statements.

Tom DeLay has a twin that he absorbed while he and she were in the womb. It’s in his shoulder which is why you never see him with his shirt off.

Rick Perry spends his evenings pulling the legs off of cockroaches, laughing uproariously as the try to run away.

Barack Obama actually was born in Kenya and what is more he still maintains a permanent residence in Nairobi.

Michele Bachmann got her degree from MIT and is actually a former NASA rocket scientist.

John Kyl gets all of his cocaine from his pastor.

Michelle Obama’s first words to Barack when they first met were “Me love you long time.”

And finally,

The goal of the Republican Party is to bring prosperity to the middle class by bringing back jobs that have been lost to other countries and cutting defense spending.

Ah. Cathartic.

Oh, and by the way, did I mention that the statements made above were not intended to be factual statements?

Pete Olson Continues His Healthcare Lies

My congressional district, TX CD 22, Tom Delay’s old district, is a right sprawling thing that extends from the western boundary of Fort Bend County to Galveston Bay, with a little arm that goes down I 45 to Galveston Island.

It is Tom Delay’s gift to his former constituents.

So while we got to see Congressman Pete Olson (R TX-22) in a Sugar Land town hall the weekend before this, he held another one in La Marque, clear on the other side of the district one evening last week.

John Coby was there with some others, and videoed a part of Olson’s program that I didn’t want to video because it was such a sickening abuse of an innocent child’s plight that it turned my stomach.

You see, Olson had, in his presentation, the photograph of a little boy who was born with a congenital heart defect. It was detected while he was still in the uterus, and the mother was told he would either be still-born or would die soon after birth.

The story goes that the mother found a doctor in Detroit that took care of things, and the boy lived. The story also goes that the mother believes that had she been covered under “The Public Option” the boy surely would have been left to die.

No rhyme, no reason for that conclusion.

But the audience ate it up in Sugar Land. What made it worse is that Pete Olson then presented the little boy, in person, alive and well. He picked him up and displayed the boy to a wildly cheering audience.

I often wonder what the boy must think about all of this.

Having the boy on display back on that Saturday in Sugar Land was like grasping an amulet against public discourse. That evening in La Marque, Olson did not have the boy to hold before the audience as a shield, as he did in Sugar Land.

This made for an entirely different state of affairs and allowed for confrontation.

Many in the audience objected to Olson's leap of logic.

“The insurance company turned her down, not the government,” said one.

Someone, an Olson supporter, retorted that “the government set up a board to turn her down.”

Truly clueless. That nitwit was citing the death panels that radical rightwing Republicans falsely claim “ObamaCare” would set up, in the future. This particular event, however, occurred 7 years ago.

Yeah, Bush was president then.

But there you have it. Olson stood there with his microphone letting his words beget complete mind-foggery in his audience. So much so that it was even too much for the congressman, who immediately shut down the meeting.

85 Days to Godwin’s Law

I have to hand it to the neoconservatives who are (thankfully) now out of power. It didn’t take them long.

It only took them 85 days for Godwin’s Law to preside over public discourse on the internet.

Or anywhere else, for that matter.

Godwin’s Law, for those who don’t know, is a law of modern human discourse. There are lots of versions, but the one I like is the one that attempts to quantify the phenomenon.

Godwin’s Law: “As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.”

Now this law was constructed in 1990 when the internet was in its infancy, and the mode of exchange of the day was a “Usenet.” But now internet discussion has mushroomed to include just about every form of human information exchange there is in existence. Godwin’s Law, by all rights, should be applied accordingly

There is a corollary to Godwin’s Law that is sometimes mistaken for the actual law. Here is Corollary 1 to Godwin’s Law:

“Once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress.”

Neoconservatives were falling all over themselves last year calling Barack Obama a socialist. The trouble is, the term “socialist” doesn’t have the bite it once had. Not since education became publicly funded. Not since Social Security was enacted.

And Medicare.

Socialist programs all.

And it certainly didn’t help warn off the voters, did it?

So if it doesn’t work trying to associate Barack Obama with far leftwing politics, why not change tactics and associate him with far rightwing politics?

Why not compare Barack Obama to Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini? Why not?

So that’s exactly with former Michigan GOP chairman Saul Anuzis decided to do, and used this as his rationale.

“‘We’ve so overused the word ‘socialism’ that it no longer has the negative connotation it had 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago,’ Mr. Anuzis said. ‘Fascism — everybody still thinks that’s a bad thing.’”

Well heck, at least he’s honest.

He’s even a little analytical about it, about how the term needs to be dressed up the correct way in order not to sound like a psychotic person:

“‘It’s politically very incorrect only because we’re not used to it,’ concluded Mr. Anuzis, who recently joined American Solutions for Winning the Future, a group led by Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker. But he acknowledged, ‘You’ve got to be careful using the term ‘economic fascism’ in the right way, so it doesn’t come off as extreme.’”

Trouble is, some were not listening when he threw out those caveats.

From the Montgomery Advertiser:

“If you think I am overreacting, you merely have to look at what leaders of his ilk have done throughout history to gain and maintain power. Yes, he is charismatic and convincing to many. Although I do not intend to link his motives directly, so was Hitler.”

Or as caught on camera at a TEA party:

I found a few more websites, some “waaaay out there” blogs but am going to opt out of linking to them because some of these people look like they are seriously unbalanced. Which is the problem with throwing wild things like this out there in the first place.

Some people see it for what it is: political rhetoric.

Some people believe every single word.

Good Is Lots, More Is Better

The title of this posting is an axiom of mine that describes how I like my Mexican cuisine.

And apparently it’s what those in the Bush Regime thought in reference to how one should administer a waterboarding,

Or more to the point, how many hundreds of times.

Now I distinctly recall when all of this was discussed a couple of years ago that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, a guy we have in custody who was one of the 9/11 planners, was waterboarded exactly once. It was this, they said, that underlined just how effective waterboarding is in getting information from “high value” terror targets.

The story spun back then was that when he was tortured there was a woman present to witness the act, and this was something that humiliated him. It was for that reason, the CIA claimed, that he stuck it out for a phenomenal 2 minutes.

And then was never waterboarded again. From ABC News (9/13/2007)

“Then KSM started talking, in idiomatic English he learned as a high school foreign exchange student and polished at a North Carolina college in the 1980s, sources said.”

“‘It was an extraordinary amount of time for him to hold out,’ one former CIA officer told ABCNews.com. ‘A red-headed female supervisor was in the room when he was being water-boarded. It was humiliating to him. So he held out.’”

“‘Then he started talking, and he never stopped,’ this former officer said. KSM was never water-boarded again, and in hours and hours of conversation with his interrogators, often over a cup of tea, he poured out his soul and the murderous deeds he committed.’”

Well I guess it’s “Liar, liar pants on fire” isn’t it?

Now we find that instead of getting waterboarded only once, and this resulted in our getting tons of valuable information from a guy who became so highly motivated not to get waterboarded again, he was actually waterboarded 183 times.

In a single month.

Lies. So many lies.

Revealing to us that not only is waterboarding so NOT an effective tool of torture, but we had people who were committing these heinous acts of terrorism actually spreading anecdotal lies about how superior it is, and what great results you get from it.

Think of it. These people knew about the ineffectiveness of the tool and not only kept on doing it, but spreading bald-faced lies about it all.

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Is anyone still wondering why America is referred to in the Islamic world as “The Great Satan?”

I’ll Say It: Rush Limbaugh for President

Let’s get real. Who is the best fit for the Grand Obstructionist Party in 2012? Who can the Party of NO put up to oppose the juggernaut that is the Obama Administration?

Sarah Palin? Give me a break. Besides being a woman, and no self-respecting white-haired puffy Republican man would ever want a woman for anything other than a cabinet post (keeping in mind that every Cabinet title starts with “Secretary of”), Sarah Palin brings no constituency with her, other than the 900,000 who prefer to live in darkness and twilight most of the year.

Other than Palin, all we have are a bunch of 1990’s retreads.

And Joe the Plumber.

OK, so let’s jump to the next generation. Eric Cantor, Republican congressman from Virginia has been making lots of noise lately. He is king of the one-liners, it seems. His comment that “‘I told you so’ politics won’t bring bipartisanship” has been oft quoted and repeated.

Wait. Isn’t he Jewish?

Yep. Not only is he Jewish, but he is the only son of Abraham currently serving in Congress.

So, no. They will have to take a pass on Cantor. No Christ Killers in the Oval Office yet, at least not ones sent there by the Republican Christian Evangelical base. That would be too much for them to take.

And Bobby Jindal, the GOP’s own paean to ethnic diversity is a non-starter. Not after fumbling the ball in his near on air head-to-head joust with Barack Obama the evening of Obama’s address to the joint House and Senate last week.

Who does that leave? Who could possibly raise the Grand Obstructionist Party’s standard against “the Democrat menace?” Well, isn’t it already obvious? All you have to do is watch the news . . . and read the political cartoons. There is only one person capable of leading the Party of No to victory in 2012.

And that person, friends and neighbors, is Rush Limbaugh.

He is the perfect fit. And I’m not just talking about his 4XL shirt size. I’m talking about how he so neatly fits in with the Republican notion of truth. Of how careful Republicans are these days in forming opinions before checking their facts.

Take for example the case of Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack R-Palm Springs, former wife of Sonny Bono, who knew she had Barack Obama dead to rights when, in her attempt to oppose his stimulus package, decided to pounce on the president’s "pet project", the “Mag-Lev train from Disneyland to Las Vegas”, ordering her aide to “get him the bill, it's right there, show him.” Only to have her aide have to return to her and report “it’s not in the bill.”

Now that is what I call making sure of your facts before checking on them. Something that Rush Limbaugh has demonstrated time and time again. As a matter of fact, the facts that are most often repeated by the GOP office holders these days are the facts that they get from Rush Limbaugh or from Fox News. Limbaugh and Fox, the daring duo of truth in the right-thinking media. And who is Rush Limbaugh’s equal in Fox News? Why none other than Sean Hannity. That icon of the low hairline. He of the dragging knuckles.

So why not?

Why not propose the Republican Dream Ticket for 2012. Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannity.

A ticket for the ages.

A one-way ticket to political oblivion.

John McCain On Respectfulness, Giuliani On Why It Disappeared

As is my habit, I try to make sure that I take in NBC’s Meet the Press every Sunday morning. This election season makes it even more imperative because it is on these news shows that you get the nuance of politics.

Today, former mayor Rudy “A noun, a verb and 9/11” Giulani was featured among others, and right out of the chute Tom Brokaw brought up John McCain’s struggle against his former self. A struggle he is waging now that he has on his campaign staff the very people who smeared him in 2000.

Brokaw played a video of McCain speaking on the whole notion of respect on April 14, 2008:

“This will be a respectful campaign. Americans want a respectful campaign.”

“They're tired of the attacks. They're tired of the impugning people's character and integrity. They want a respectful campaign, and, and I, and I'm am of the firm belief that they'll get it, and they can get it if the American people demand it and reject a lot of this negative stuff that goes on.”

Then Brokaw played McCain’s latest smear ad on Barack Obama’s “one accomplishment” while in the Illinois state senate: sex education for kindergarteners.

I kid you not.

Here is the meat of the ad’s message which can be viewed at YouTube here:

“Obama's one accomplishment? Legislation to teach comprehensive sex education to kindergartners. Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama, wrong on education, wrong for your family.”

Oddly enough, this is not something dreamed up by Karl Rove and his henchmen. This is something they dredged up from the film vaults. Old, old stuff from when Obama ran for state senator against Alan Keyes, who originally floated this sling of mud. Barack is seen here discussing the tactic at a Planned Parenthood conference. Tom Brokaw posed an analysis courtesy of the Washington Post, and handed it over to the former mayor:

“Any number of publications have looked at that ad, and here's what The Washington Post had to say: "The McCain ad is wrong when it claims--in a voice dripping with sarcasm--that Obama's `one accomplishment' in the education field was a sex education bill for kindergartners. While it is true that Obama supported the bill, he was not one of the sponsors. As far as kindergartners were concerned, the principal purpose of the bill was to make them aware of the risk of inappropriate touching and sexual predators." Given all the major issues that are before us today, wasn't that ad and its misrepresentation inappropriate on the part of the McCain campaign, Mr. Mayor?”

And how did Rudy Giuliani answer Tom Brokaw’s question when the video ended?

“I think the only thing wrong about that ad is it lists it as an accomplishment of Senator Obama.”

Now that’s odd. Giuliani criticized the ad for being inaccurate?

But here is the kicker, and here is the real reason that McCain is coming out with negative ads against Barack Obama. It’s all Obama’s fault:

“I think the, the main reason for that is that Senator Obama has refused to debate in these town hall meetings every week with Senator McCain. I think if they--if the two of them were out there--we saw that the other night in Harlem. If the two of them are out there answering questions, a lot of these ads are going to get done that way, they're going to be able to confront each other with these things.”

Now there’s a leap of logic. McCain feels he needs to launch negative ads at Obama because Obama has turned down the notion of doing joint town halls with McCain.

So it is what it is, right? Giuliani apparently believes that in retribution for not going along with his idea, McCain will approve of ads that are blatant “enhancements of the truth.”

The whole problem with this is that I think for once, Giuliani was probably telling the truth.

Chris Bell Has a Stalking Horse Opponent in the SD 17 Special Election

Republicans love their little jokes. Like when Rush Limbaugh exhorted his ditto-heads to go out and vote for Hillary Clinton in the Texas primary. Like when a man named Tom Morrison ran in the CD 22 2004 contest as a Libertarian against Tom DeLay and Richard Morrison, the Democrat on the ballot, giving TV stations the opportunity to announce that Richard Morrison was a Libertarian.

I could go on and on.

And now, it appears that Tom Craddick ally, former Democratic State Rep. Ron Wilson has recruited a woman to run in the special election. A black woman.

Wilson even escorted Simmons to file her candidacy papers and paid her filing fees.

Stephanie Simmons filed to run in the SD 17 special election minutes before filing deadline on August 29th. A day earlier she filed an address change on her voter registration from her former residence outside of SD 17’s boundaries, to Missouri City.

Chris Bell filed suit. The candidate, he argued, had not lived within the district for a year as is required by state law.

Yet the woman claims to have moved to her present address on November 2nd 2007, just enough to qualify for a 1 year residency within the district, and testified to that effect in court.

The judge didn’t believe her story.

But that didn’t prevent him from dismissing Bell’s case. Case dismissed, said the judge, because Bell’s team failed to produce “single witness or piece of paper.”

So it’s OK to lie under oath in court, as long as you get away with it. What the heck, what’s good for Scooter Libby should be good for Stephanie Simmons.

Simmons’ lawyer fees, by the way, were paid by Ron Wilson.

This is such blatant manipulation. So very Republican in every aspect. Just as the McCain campaign has recruited a woman to be his VP running mate, in hopes of garnering the votes of some former Hillary supporters, Ron Wilson and Tom Craddick think that by putting a black woman on the ballot that African-American voters in SD 17 will flock to the polls and vote for the black candidate.

Polls have shown that McCain’s gambit has failed. Democratic women realize that a vote for McCain/Palin runs against their own self interests. SD 17 residents likewise realize that this candidate is a sham, someone put up by Republicans, a stalking horse to dilute the Democratic votes for Bell.

Bell will not appeal the decision. Justice is simply something that is not delivered in Texas . . . yet. So this will stand and Simmons’ name will remain on the ballot.

But one thing this day in court produced was a public look under the rock that Republicans live under. Light was cast on them as they scurried about in their exoskeletons doing their best to look like honest upstanding citizens.

All along knowing that the truth is out.

Jon Stewart Exposes Republican Truth Spinners

Did you see The Daily Show on Wednesday night? I switched over at 10 sharp even though Sarah Palin hadn’t finished her speech. I was done listening to her lies and pettiness, anyway. I was not disappointed.

We all know that Republicans will spin the truth any way they want if it works for them on one day, and then flip their story when the very thing they criticized becomes a Republican talking point.

We know that but Jon Stewart’s people did a fantastic job setting Karl Rove and Bill O’Reilly against themselves, showing talking heads on Fox News in clear flip flops over playing the gender card, and even McCain’s own policy advisor displaying some “amazing double standards” (her words).



Republicans will say anything to get elected. Anything. It doesn’t have to be the truth, and they don’t necessarily have to agree with what they said a week or a month ago. And it doesn’t bother them, because the ends justify the means.

Why Is Karl Rove Still Being Invited to News Programs?

Former White House political advisor Karl Rove was holding forth on George Stephanopoulos’ This Week news program this Sunday morning. It was pretty sickening. This is the guy who got a mediocre at best son-of-a-president elected (well, the Supreme Court cast the final votes on that one) and re-elected (again, did Ohio really go for Bush in ’04?). We spent years listening to this guy twist the truth in more ways than Fox News can even ever imagine.

Now that he has been chased out of Washington in the aftermath of his treasonous act in the Valerie Plame affair, an act that he successfully shifted the responsibility for, to the shoulders of his aide, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Rove has been very low key. Yes, he has held forth on some campaigns and is said to be advising the McCain Campaign, but he has been in the background from what I could see.

But now, George Stephanopoulos let him come on his news program to spew his garbage once more. Even now, as members of congress are poised to find him in contempt of congress for ignoring their subpoena.

Rove is claiming Executive Privilege. But it has been pointed out that the action in question never came to the attention of George Bush. Rove, by his own admission never brought up the role that he played in getting charges filed against former (Democratic) Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. How then, can he claim Executive Privilege? It doesn’t work that way. Aides and advisors don’t get to enjoy that privilege. That is reserved for the Executive.

Maybe this is why Stephanopoulos invited Rove to his program, so that he can ask him about the subpoena. The last question handed to Rove was on just this affair:

“Here’s what the House report said, it said ‘In May 2007 a Republican attorney from northern Alabama named Jill Simpson wrote an affidavit stating that in November 2002 she heard a prominent Alabama Republican operative named Bill Canary say that Karl Rove had contacted the Justice Department about bringing a prosecution of Don Siegelman. The question for Mr. Rove is whether he directly or indirectly discussed the possibility of prosecuting Don Siegelman with either the Justice Department or Alabama Republicans.’ Did you?”

Stephanopoulos’s question was “Did you do this?” But true to form, Karl Rove didn’t hear that question. The question he heard was “When did you first hear of the Don Siegelman case?”

So instead of answering the question that was asked, he answered the question he heard.

At much length.

ROVE: “Lemme say three things. First of all . . .uh . . .I think it’s interesting that everybody that was supposedly on that telephone call that Ms. Simpson talks about says that the call never took place. I’d say that . . .”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “Although she produced the cell phone record, according to the committee.”

ROVE: “Well, I would say three things. First of all, I . . . uh. . . fsh . . .I . . . uh . . I learned about Don Siegelman’s prosecution by reading about it in the newspaper. Second of all, this is really about a constitutional question of separation of powers. Congress, the House Judiciary Committee wants to be able to call presidential aides on its whim . . uh . . to testify violating the separation of powers. Executive Privilege has been asserted by the White House in a similar instance in the Senate, it will probably be asserted very quickly in this . . . in the House. Third, the White House . . . and . . . has agreed . . . I’m not asser . . .I’m not asserting any personal privilege. The White House has offered . . . and my lawyers offered . . . several different ways in which if the House wants to find out information about this they can find out information about this. And they refused to avail themselves of those opportunities. We didn’t say . . . .close off any option to do what anything else you want to do in the future. We said if you want to hear about this let’s sit down and talk about this and then if you . . .you know . . . you’re entitled to do what you want to do in the future. This is now tied up in court, it’s goin’ to be tied up in court and settled in court. And frankly, the House last week doing this . . . you know . . . uh . . .you know. . . is duplicating what the Senate has already done and it’s already found its way into the court.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “But to be very clear, you did not contact the Justice Department about this case?”

ROVE: “Uh. . . I read about . . . I’m gonna simply say what I’ve said before which is I found out about Don Siegelman’s investigation and indictment by reading about it in the newspaper.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “But that’s not a denial . . . ”

ROVE: “Uh . . .I . . I. . . uh …I…I’ve . . . you know . . .heh . . . I read about . . .I heard about it, I read about it, I learned about it for the first time by reading about it in the newspaper.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: Mr. Rove, thanks very much."

So did George Stephanopoulos get what he wanted? This is, after all, Karl Rove we are talking about. Of course he would dance around and start talking at the speed of light about everything but not answering the question. That’s what Rove does best. So if that was the reason for bringing this traitor up in front of the cameras again to spew his vile filth, I have to wonder if they got what they wanted.

All I saw was a stammering 17 year old explaining why he hadn’t turned in his lab report.

I don’t know where it came from, just from some people who are apparently only barely political. It is these kinds of groups that we need right now to bring the truth to the lies, to bring fact to the fiction, to bring integrity back to the Clinton campaign . . .

… to put a “nine” in Hillary Clinton’s shootin’ hand.



That’s how it all went back then, right?

More Americans Care About Domestic Prices Than Iraq Casualties?

Watching the Sunday morning national news programs this morning, as is my habit, I was struck by something mentioned only in passing, that only 28% of Americans knew that nearly 4000 American soldiers have been killed since the Iraq War began, now just 5 years ago this Wednesday the 20th.

It’s true. Reported at CBS News, a recent Pew Poll of Americans finds that the Iraq War has been supplanted by other issues, domestic ones. The economy. The rise in the price of gasoline and the concomitant rise in the prices of the necessities of life.

Now I understand all of that. These things are close to us and affect our lives in the immediate sense. But look, we still have two wars still going on, one of them being fought for no other reason now than the fact that we started it. We have all of this, but the prices of gasoline and food have invaded our conscious sense of urgency.

72% of us are not aware of the fact that as of today, March 17th, nearly 4000 people have been killed in this war. 3988 Americans to be exact. 4296 total coalition lives to be exact. 4296 lives have been lost in Iraq since hostilities began.

And that’s just counting our combatants. Over 89,000 Iraqis have lost their lives in this conflict, including combatants and civilians.

This is good news for the people who started this war. This is good news for the Bush Regime. This is good news that the biggest military blunder in US history is being supplanted by the price of milk.

What we need to realize, I have finally concluded, is that it is all related. These people, these tens of thousands of people, all died because someone lied. They lied and everyone just went along. They created the war, and that created artificialities everywhere. The price of oil has been steadily climbing historically, but in all history there have been nothing like the price increases that have gone on since March 2003.

Since the Iraq War began.

Even in constant dollars, oil is now higher than it has ever been in history.

It’s all related. Some people die, others pay $4 for a gallon of milk or a gallon of gasoline. It’s all related, and the blame for it all goes squarely on the leaders in power right now.

These are the ones that need to be thrown out of office by Americans, voters who have had enough of their lies and deceit. Milk or blood, it makes no difference.

It’s all related.

Keith Olberman: George Bush Does Not Deserve to be President

On December 6th , Countdown had Keith Olberman on an 8 minute rant at which he concludes that George Bush does not deserve to be President. He begins this way:
