Sign of the Times: Whirlpool Shipping Jobs to Mexico

Today, St. Joseph Michigan-based Whirlpool Corp. announced that it was taking a $51 million charge to close its Evansville Indiana plant, moving its product manufacturing effort to Mexico.

Effectively moving 1100 American jobs to Mexico.

Why is this so shocking to me? Whirlpool, to me, is the quintessential American manufacturing company. They produce American-made appliances under not only the Whirlpool brand but also the Sears Kenmore brand.

It is, in other words, a national icon.

A national icon that is moving its payroll south of the border, where they can get things done more cheaply, with non-union labor.

And do you think that our mid-Western elected officials, our mid-Western congressmen and senators are lifting a hand in protest? Heck no.

This is exactly what they want. What is good for business is good for these anti-union heartland legislators. This is what NAFTA is all about.

Never mind that these same people are screaming bloody murder over the illegal aliens who are taking good American jobs away from the American-born labor force. That’s just another kettle of fish to these people.

When Americans lose their jobs to Mexican nationals in their country, well that’s just capitalism. That’s the free market.

And that is just pure hypocrisy.

This makes no sense to me at all. Are these the same folks that cry out about how illegals are stealing jobs from patriotic Americans? C'mon. When it's caplitalism and making money, it's a different story. Like any American is going to accept a job picking lettuce for $2.00/hr? Just another sign of GOP hypocrisy.
