I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again because nothing on
Earth or in Heaven has changed in the last 7 years.
The immigration bill currently being debated in the USSenate is doomed to failure. It hasn’t a chance of passing in the House, but in
the Senate, where it has its best chance of passing, it probably won’t pass
there either.
And the reason it won’t pass has nothing to do with what is
being said: that it gives amnesty to 11 million undocumented immigrants, that
immigrants will get your welfare and your social security. That immigrants will
take all of your jobs.
It has nothing to do with any of that.
Here is what it has to do with.
Money and Power.
The two recognized forms of legal tender in Washington, D.C.
Money. Republicans who oppose the immigration bill oppose it
because they like it how it is now just fine. It’s all ducky with them and
their corporate donors. Undocumented immigrants take the low-end jobs and must
accept lower than minimum wage because who are they going to go to for unfair
labor practices. Homebuilders, meat packers, agribusiness, you name it. Without
undocumented immigrant labor hundreds or thousands of commodities would go up
in price. Immigration reform cuts into profits and that will never do.
Power. Republicans who oppose the immigration bill oppose it
because they like having a bloody shirt to wave around over Democrats, who just
want to make it all OK. Solve the problem and you take an issue away from these
Republicans, some of whom remain in office because they keep waving that bloody
shirt that revs up their ignorant base – voters who can be riled by visions of
dark people taking jobs and resources from them and theirs.
It’s either one or the other, but the two together form a
mighty voting bloc that will for foreseeable future, spell death to any
immigration reform ever to be proposed.
